De GoPro Hero7 Black ligt in de schappen en is zonder twijfel de beste GoPro ooit. Wat maakt het zo geweldig? Het zijn natuurlijk de grote nieuwe features HyperSmooth en Live Streaming.
In deze functie ga ik kijken naar HyperSmooth, wat het is, wat het doet en in welke modi, resoluties en framerate het werkt.
Ik zal er zelfs naar kijken om het uit te schakelen.
Wat is HyperSmooth
In wezen is het elektronische beeldstabilisatie (EIS), het is al een paar jaar een ding en SteadyShot Inside was een belangrijk kenmerk van de Sony Action-camera's toen ze voor het eerst werden gelanceerd.
EIS deed voor het eerst mee aan GoPro Hero-camera's met de lancering van de Hero5, en toen dat eenmaal was gekoppeld aan de GoPro Karma Grip, had je meteen een winnende combinatie.
Dat was totdat je snel wilde bewegen of een microfoon of ander accessoire wilde aansluiten, maar ach, het was nog steeds geweldig. Het feit was dat tot HyperSmooth, gemotoriseerde stabilisatie, zoals aangeboden door de Karma Grip, veel beter was dan welk type EIS dan ook.
Maar nu verandert HyperSmooth alles, het verhoogt in wezen de EIS-stabilisatie van de GoPro Hero7 Black voorbij die van elke gemotoriseerde cardanische ophanging. Het werkt niet alleen onder normale handheld-omstandigheden, maar het is net zo indrukwekkend wanneer het wordt gebruikt door liefhebbers van extreme sporten bij het afdalen van een heuvel, het vangen van een golf of het springen op een rots.
Omdat er geen mechanische cardanische ophanging is om het gestabiliseerde effect te creëren, ben je niet langer beperkt door een extra apparaat, dus waar je vroeger je GoPro mee naartoe nam voordat je een gestabiliseerde wereld wilde, kun je dat nu weer doen.
Zoals je hieruit kunt zien, is nog steeds de hoeveelheid detail die wordt weergegeven aan de kant van de Hero7 Black, er is veel meer detail dan aan de kant van de Hero 6 Black. Dit laat zien dat de verbeterde stabilisatie van de Hero7 niet alleen de beweging verzacht, maar ook de algehele kwaliteit en details van de vastgelegde beelden enorm verbetert. Hieronder vindt u een zij-aan-zij vergelijking. Dit beeldmateriaal is gemaakt met GoPro-stangbevestigingen op een Specialized S-Works-hardtail uit 1994.
Met de Hero 6 Black en Karma grip kun je bijvoorbeeld niet:
Ga zwemmen
Hang uit een vliegtuig zonder dat de cardanische ophanging rondzwaait
Bevestig de Karma Grip op dezelfde manier aan de buitenkant van een rallyauto
Bevestig de Grip aan een dier en verwacht dat het zal overleven.
Sluit hem aan op je rugzak zonder dat hij zwaarder wordt en in het algemeen in de weg zit.
Met de GoPro Hero7 Black kun je:
Ga zwemmen, met haaien als je wilt.
Bevestig hem aan een onderdeel van een rallyauto met de wetenschap dat hij minstens 20% overlevingskans heeft
Iedereen heeft een leeuw die ik kan lenen, een voor Jason Wharam denk ik.
Je ziet er nog steeds vreemd uit, maar het valt veel minder op.
Wat is GoPro Hero7 Black HyperSmooth
HyperSmooth is geavanceerde beeldstabilisatie, net als eerdere versies van EIS, het lijnt frames uit om de hobbels en wiebels te verwijderen die ontstaan bij het vasthouden van een camera.
Wat HyperSmooth anders doet, is dat het de inhoud van het beeldmateriaal analyseert en vervolgens de frames verwerkt die overeenkomen met de inhoud.
GoPro-beeldstabilisatie snijdt meestal bij aan 10% aan de randen, en hoewel dit niet wordt vermeld wanneer HyperSmooth is geselecteerd, lijkt het erop dat dit ook het geval is.
Je zult ook merken dat je HyperSmooth alleen kunt selecteren als je een beeldverhouding van 16:9 gebruikt.
Nu filmt GoPro meestal in 16:9 voor 1080p en 4K, maar biedt wel een 4:3-verhoudingsoptie als je wilt filmen met 1440p of 4K.
Dit laat zien dat HyperSmooth veel meer hoofdruimte heeft dan de vorige IS. Although this headroom has always existed, it’s only now that the GoPro has the processing power to handle it, it can make full use of this extra footage.
If you think normally EIS will steal 10% of the frame, HyperSmooth takes 25% headroom that’s a big leap.
This has all been made possible by the updated GP1 processor and the additional GB of RAM which takes the GoPro Hero7 Black to 2GB of internal RAM.
The outcome is dramatic as the video shows and it also makes features such as TimeWarp possible.
What GoPro Hero7 Black resolutions and framerates does HyperSmooth work?
Essentially all 16:9 resolutions with the exception of 4K at 60fps. It doesn’t work for any 4:3 aspect ratio footage as obviously this gets rid of the headroom required by HyperSmooth.
That doesn’t mean that you’re without EIS at 4:3, if you dip into the settings then you’ll find the option to switch on Image Stabilisation, once selected you will be warned about the crop but at least you have it!
Can I switch off HyperSmooth
No, it’s always on and at the moment there is no simple on/off button. When you see the footage you’ll see on or off there’s probably very little difference so why bother.
If you are adamant that you need to kill off HyperSmooth then the other option is to switch to 4:3 ratio and you can do that by tapping the icon in the top right of the screen.
As there is no headroom, HyperSmooth can’t work so will in effect be switched off. You’ll also have a little more headroom for composing when it comes to editing.
Are there any side effects of using HyperSmooth
Yes, on the odd occasion you’ll see slight warping or rippling in the background, this is due to the digital processing trying to fill and stretch content into p[lace.
It’s a common side effect of applied image stabilisation, but it has to be said that so far there has been little or no sign of this in the footage.
Rolling shutter is another issue that could have been a major problem, but GoPro is pleased that they have completely eliminated this effect from the footage.
A final note on HyperSmooth
HyperSmooth changes everything, stabilised free floating footage is what made the films Rocky and the Shining so groundbreaking.
It wasn’t just the innovation but it gave filmmakers the ability to film from a perspective and style that we’re all used too. It in effect made the footage hyperreal.
With the likes of the GoPro Karma Grip and DJI Ronin-S we’ve had this technology in our hands for a few years, but never at the size of simplicity of the GoPro Hero7 Black.
In my review of the GoPro Hero7 Black, I said it was the best GoPro of all time and probably the best camera of the year. This is due to this compact ultra stabilised form that will enable anyone to film anywhere with a professionalism that has never been possible before.

There is one thing, now the GoPro is so good there needs to be an evolution, and that will come with the GnarBox 2 and mobile editing and publishing.
